Georg Ots 95 Gala Concert

Georg Ots 95th Anniversary Concert

Estonian National Opera
March 21, 2015  at 7pm.
Conductors: Vello Pähn, Jüri Alperten
Sorpano Helena Juntunen, Finland

“On March 21 Estonian National Opera celebrates the 95th anniversary of Georg Ots – the most famous and admired Estonian singer. His expressive and lyrical baritone voice has left a deep impression in the hearts of the audience. Ots’ frequent performances of classical music and pop concerts on the radio and TV made him a true star. During the 30 years of his career at the Estonian National Opera, he created a whole gallery of roles polished in details and touched with his stage charm. His Iago (Verdi’s “Otello”), Demon (Rubinstein’s “The Demon”), Rigoletto (Verdi’s “Rigoletto”), Don Giovanni (Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”), Papageno (Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte”), Porgy (Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess”), Cervantes/don Quixote (Leigh’s “Man of La Mancha”) and many other roles are unforgettable. Ots was one of the few singers who had an opportunity to sing to international audiences, including audiences in the US, during the post-war period. Read more.

Fabulous Bäckström Brothers

Fabulous Bäckström Brothers

A wildly funny musical comedy about singing brothers.

This comedy about three musicians is guaranteed to have classical music enthusiasts in stitches as well as those who think opera is a ridiculous form of expression.
Lauri Meri/Helsingin Sanomat

See Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring on YouTube! Walhalla meets Vaudeville! Die Niebelungen meets Ninja!

A nod to the Marx brothers and Monty Python, the comedy concerns the dynamics between two singing brothers. The show meanders swiftly between opera, comedy, concert and vaudeville.

…the farcical set-up explodes into a slapstick comedy the like of which you’ve never seen before, when a contemporary opera about the collision between matter and antimatter, conceived in the backseat of a car, intertwines with the unspoken conflicts between two brothers sitting in the front seats, and the horn-helmeted Wagnerian god figures who get lost in the pink-hued reality of roadside fast-food cafes.
Lauri Meri/Helsingin Sanomat

The comedy is written and directed by two of the most celebrated British comedy makers Toby Parker and Aitor Basauri, artistic directors of the internationally awarded Spymonkey theatre group (e.g. Melbourne Comedy Festival, Just For Laughs Montreal, Cirque du Soleil Las Vegas). “If there’s a funnier theatre company out there, I can’t think of it.” (The Times)
